Can Ultraman Achieve Global Success Like Godzilla?

Fans of Japanese giant monster movies have been having an exceptional year, with impressive releases like Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. However, one franchise that has not fully capitalized on the global market is Ultraman. Despite being a $7.4 billion-dollar industry in Asia, Ultraman remains largely unrecognized in the United States, with few Americans familiar with the franchise beyond its popularity in Japan.

Ultraman, introduced in 1966’s Ultra Q TV series, is a central figure in Japan’s Kyodai Hero subgenre of tokusatsu media, where heroes grow to fight kaiju monsters. Despite generating billions in merchandise and becoming the third-most-profitable licensed character in the world during the 80s, Ultraman has struggled to gain traction outside of Asia. While American audiences have been exposed to franchises like Super Sentai and Godzilla through adaptations like Power Rangers and the Monsterverse, Ultraman has not achieved the same level of crossover appeal.

In the early 2000s, Ultraman Tiga found a spot on the FoxBox programming block, introducing American audiences to the character. However, the franchise has yet to make a significant impact in the U.S., despite efforts like the recent animated adaptation on Netflix. With the success of the Monsterverse, now is the perfect time to bring Ultraman to a wider American audience through a live-action adaptation. The superhero genre is ripe for reinvention, and Ultraman could offer a fresh and exciting new dimension to the market.

As the Monsterverse continues to rake in profits, it’s essential for franchises like Ultraman to explore new opportunities for growth and success. By taking inspiration from the successes and strategies of established brands like Godzilla and Power Rangers, Ultraman can expand its reach and appeal to a broader international audience. The time is now for Ultraman to step into the spotlight and establish itself as a formidable force in the global entertainment industry.
