Bipartisan Appeal for National Voter Registration Day

Celebrate Democracy: National Voter Registration Day 2023

On September 17, Americans commemorated National Voter Registration Day, a nonpartisan civic initiative aimed at promoting active participation in democracy and ensuring that citizens are registered to vote in the upcoming November 5 general election. This day serves as a valuable reminder for individuals to verify their voter registration status, stay informed about critical election updates, and prepare for absentee voting, which begins on September 20. Voters can find detailed information on registration and voting processes through the Hennepin County Elections website.

To mark this event, members of the League of Women Voters of Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, and Hopkins (LWV MEPH) set up camp at Hennepin Technical College in Eden Prairie. Their mission was clear: to engage with students and staff, providing essential information and facilitating voter registration. Sharon Borine, president of LWV MEPH, emphasized the importance of empowering individuals to exercise their voting rights. “We are here today for democracy… The one thing you can do to make a difference is vote,” she stated, underscoring the potent impact of each individual’s contribution to the democratic process.

Several students, including first-time voter Idman Noor, participated in the registration event. Noor personally expressed her enthusiasm about casting her vote in her first general election, demonstrating the significant role of civic engagement in shaping young citizens’ futures.

Looking ahead, LWV MEPH will continue to offer voter registration and informational events. The next scheduled event will take place on Saturday, September 21, at Lush Cosmetics in Ridgedale Center, Minnetonka. In addition to these registration events, LWV MEPH also organized four candidate forums on local issues, fostering informed voting in municipal elections.

Importantly, whilst the organization has “women” in its title, the League of Women Voters is inclusive and welcomes all individuals to become members, regardless of gender. In fact, around 20% of their membership consists of men. The league prides itself on maintaining neutrality, welcoming diverse political views without inquiring about members’ political affiliations.

Key Dates to Remember:

As we approach the general election, Hennepin County has provided vital deadlines that all voters should note:

  • September 20: Absentee voting begins.
  • October 15: Deadline for pre-registration.
  • November 4: In-person absentee voting closes at 5 p.m.
  • November 5: General Election Day (polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.).

While pre-registration painlessly facilitates the voting process, individuals who miss the deadline have the opportunity to register at their designated polling place on Election Day, ensuring that every eligible voter can participate.

National Voter Registration Day serves as an essential annual reminder for all citizens to engage in the democratic process actively. By registering to vote and staying informed about upcoming elections, individuals take the crucial steps toward shaping their communities and influencing future policies. The ongoing efforts of organizations like LWV MEPH are vital in fostering these democratic values and ensuring accessible voting for all.
