Binghamton Ranks #1 SUNY School by Forbes & WSJ

Binghamton University Tops SUNY Rankings: A Closer Look at Its Achievements

Binghamton University has earned a distinguished recognition as the leading institution within the State University of New York (SUNY) system, achieving top spots in two renowned college rankings: Forbes’ “America’s Top Colleges” and The Wall Street Journal’s “2025 Best Colleges in the U.S.” This accomplishment not only showcases Binghamton’s academic excellence but also highlights its commitment to fostering student success and providing a diverse educational experience.

President Harvey Stenger expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The SUNY system is home to some really impressive schools, so it’s exciting to see Binghamton take the top SUNY spot on both of these prestigious lists.” He emphasized the university’s mission to empower students from various backgrounds with the necessary resources and opportunities for future success, which these rankings reflect.

The Wall Street Journal’s Methodology

The Wall Street Journal derived its rankings through a comprehensive survey of students and alumni, focusing on three core elements. Student outcomes—comprising graduation rates and post-graduate salary increases—dominated the score, accounting for 70%. Learning environment was also a crucial factor, representing 20% of the score, which considered the institution’s quality of facilities, career preparation, and available learning opportunities. Finally, diversity, which included various social and educational metrics, contributed the remaining 10%.

In this assessment, Binghamton University was positioned as the #2 public university and the #13 university overall in New York. The institution particularly excelled in several subcategories, earning accolades as the #1 SUNY school for best salaries and ranking #2 within SUNY and #10 overall in New York for best value.

Insights from Forbes Ranking

Forbes employed a multifaceted methodology to determine its rankings, taking into account various data sources, including federal education databases and alumni salary metrics. Key factors included alumni salary (20%), debt levels (15%), graduation rate (15%), return on investment (15%), retention rate (10%), academic success (10%), and the unique Forbes American Leaders list (15%).

This American Leaders list evaluates alumni achievements in leadership and entrepreneurial success, considering distinctions such as appearances on prominent lists like 30 Under 30 and notable award winners, including Nobel Prize laureates.

In Forbes’ evaluation, Binghamton again showcased its strength, ranking as the #2 public university and #8 overall in New York. It was also recognized as #26 among public universities nationally, #36 in the Northeast, and #56 in research institutions.

A Commitment to Excellence

Provost Donald Hall highlighted the significance of these rankings, stating, “These rankings put an emphasis on experience and outcomes, and Binghamton excels in both areas.” He noted that Binghamton provides a rich educational experience through its diverse learning environment, state-of-the-art facilities, and a dedicated faculty. Graduates leave Binghamton well-prepared for successful careers across various industries.

With its exceptional standings in these prestigious rankings, Binghamton University continues to pave the way for future students, reinforcing its status as a top choice within the SUNY system and beyond. Whether it’s through outstanding student outcomes, innovative learning environments, or a commitment to diversity, Binghamton remains dedicated to nurturing talent and excellence in higher education.
