ATRI Study: Renewable Diesel for Decarbonization

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has recently published a report analyzing the benefits of renewable diesel (RD) as a viable alternative to battery electric vehicle (BEV) trucks. This report, following up on previous research on zero-emission vehicles, utilizes the U.S. Department of Energy’s GREET Model to confirm the potential of RD in lowering CO2 emissions in the trucking industry.

In the comparison between RD and BEV pathways, the report found that relying on BEV for CO2 reduction is nearly six times more expensive than using RD. The analysis considers three key criteria: environmental benefits, operational capabilities, and financial viability. It highlights the negative environmental impact of converting trucks using RD to BEV, as well as the operational and cost benefits of utilizing RD as an alternative fuel.

According to Andy Owens, CEO of A&M Transport, transitioning to renewable diesel has been a successful move for his company, offering concrete evidence of its environmental benefits and ease of implementation compared to other low-carbon options. ATRI estimates that transitioning to BEV for long-haul trucking would cost over $1 trillion in infrastructure and vehicle purchases over 15 years. In contrast, achieving similar CO2 benefits with RD would cost $203 billion, representing significant cost savings.

With the scalability and immediate deployment potential of RD in trucks without modifications, achieving CO2 benefits with RD can be done on a much shorter timeline compared to a BEV transition. A copy of the full report can be accessed through ATRI’s website.

ATRI, a not-for-profit research organization in the trucking industry, is committed to conducting critical research to uphold a safe, secure, and efficient transportation system. For more information, visit ATRI’s website.
