Ascendal Group: Whippet overhaul and franchising focus are core

Ascendal Group: Whippet Revamp and Franchise Expansion at the Forefront

Ascendal Group, a consulting partner on bus franchising schemes, is now focused on becoming a bus operator. UK Managing Director Jonathan Ziebart is advocating for franchising in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough area, despite Ascendal’s Whippet business already operating there. The group believes that greater public control and clear ownership structures are essential for successful franchising.

Ascendal’s recent disposal of its minority stake in Bravo Transport in Hong Kong signifies a shift towards franchising domestically. The group aims to bid for franchise contracts in areas like Liverpool, with a focus on generating private investment through contract length consideration. Ascendal’s work with the University of Cambridge to provide zero-emission vehicles highlights the benefits of longer-term contracts.

Whippet, Ascendal’s current focus, required significant turnaround work in 2023. Jonathan Ziebart took over leadership of the UK business, focusing on improving staff facilities, communication, and on-road performance. The introduction of a battery-electric Yutong GTe14 for FlixBus UK services demonstrates Ascendal’s commitment to zero-emission travel.

Despite challenges such as infrastructure for charging and refueling, Ascendal and FlixBus are pioneering green technologies like hydrogen and biofuels for coach services. Government incentives for operators to adopt new fuels may be essential to drive widespread adoption.

Overall, Ascendal Group’s evolution from consulting to bus operation, alongside its commitment to sustainability and innovation, positions it as a key player in the future of the UK bus industry. Jonathan Ziebart’s leadership and dedication to improving Whippet’s performance underscore the group’s commitment to excellence and progress in the transportation sector.
