The highly anticipated “Wicked” two-part movie musical event trailer made its debut on Sunday, airing during Super Bowl LVIII. The movie stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, with Erivo showcasing her chilling rendition of the ballad “Defying Gravity” in the trailer.
Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba is haunting as she declares, “Something just takes over me. And when it does, bad things happen.” The trailer offers a colorful and fantastical glimpse into director Jon M. Chu’s world of Oz, featuring vibrant landscapes and iconic locations such as the Emerald City.
The trailer also highlights the dynamic between Grande’s Glinda and Elphaba, with Grande reassuring Elphaba to not be afraid, to which Elphaba stoically replies, “It’s the Wizard who should be afraid of me.” The two-part movie is a cinematic adaptation of the famed Broadway musical, serving as a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” as it explores an alternate version of events in Oz before Dorothy’s arrival and delves into Elphaba’s transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West.
According to Broadway World, the musical “Wicked” has been a commercial success, raking in $14.8 million at the Broadway box office last year alone. The movie will also feature a star-studded cast including Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, and Bowen Yang.
“Wicked: Part 1” is set to hit theaters on November 27, followed by “Wicked: Part 2” in late 2025. With its stunning visuals, powerful performances, and a beloved story, the “Wicked” movie is poised to captivate audiences when it hits the big screen.
