ABL Medical’s IlluminOss Subsidiary Developing Anti-Microbial Blue Light Fiber Technology

IlluminOss Medical Inc, a subsidiary of IlluminOss Medical Inc, has made significant recent advancements in its usage of a unique type of blue light delivered via a long fiber-optic catheter to harden light-curing liquid within balloon-like orthopedic implants. With the data from ABL Medical Inc. demonstrating that this blue light with fiber-optic technology may offer antimicrobial benefits, the potential to expand its usage for a variety of medical applications is on the horizon.

The data presented by ABL Medical Inc. indicates that their fiber-optic technology can deliver specific frequencies of antimicrobial blue light and can be utilized within common medical devices such as catheters, endotracheal tubes, and similar medical equipment. The laboratory findings have shown that certain frequencies of visible blue light have antimicrobial effects on various bacterial species. The unique way in which the blue light inactivates pathogens may make it a promising alternative to conventional antibiotic treatments.

The ABL Medical system is an advanced, patented light source and optical delivery system that can deliver multiple frequencies of light via a single fiber. It has a unique design that allows it to emit blue light circumferentially within a catheter or similar instrument, enabling it to achieve an effective antimicrobial process unlike other traditional illumination systems. The system is currently in the development phase, and the next step will involve investigating its safety and effectiveness through regulatory review processes, with the goal of obtaining commercial access.

Having been presented at two major 2023 meetings including the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and the American Society of Microbiology conference, ABL demonstrates an incredible potential to make its way into clinical applications. With the presentation of the system’s efficacy on bacteria, the technology will undergo further evaluations to ensure its safety and effectiveness, with the hope of making it commercially available in the near future.

A privately held, early stage medical device company based out of East Providence, RI, ABL Medical Inc. is committed to harnessing multifrequency light delivery to achieve antimicrobial effects. The antimicrobial technology has not yet been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and is not currently available for sale.
