Get ready to be enchanted all over again as the first trailer for the highly anticipated movie musical “Wicked” has made its debut during the Super Bowl. Starring the talented Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, this adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel promises to take audiences on a visual and musical journey through the magical land of Oz.
While the trailer features familiar tunes like “Defying Gravity” and captivating visuals, it also offers a different perspective on the familiar story. Set before Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, “Wicked” delves into the legend of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and how she becomes intertwined with Glinda the Good Witch, portrayed by Grande.
The star-studded cast includes Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, and Jeff Goldblum as the iconic characters we know and love. Goldblum delivers a memorable performance as the Wizard of Oz, adding a layer of intrigue as he hints at the conflict between Elphaba and himself.
Director Jon M. Chu’s decision to film “Wicked” in two parts was made to honor the depth and complexity of the original material. Composer Stephen Schwartz’s insight into the structure of the show’s music, especially the pivotal song “Defying Gravity,” further explains the need for two separate films to do justice to the story.
And “Wicked” is not the only film to take advantage of the Super Bowl’s massive audience, as “Deadpool 3” also debuted a trailer during the event, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.
Audiences can mark their calendars for the release dates of “Wicked” – Part One will hit theaters on Nov. 27, 2024, and Part Two is scheduled for Nov. 26, 2025. In the meantime, the electrifying trailer promises an unforgettable journey to the magical world of Oz.
