The Poetry Foundation recently announced the 2024 Ruth Lilly & Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellows, honoring outstanding young poets with over $135,000 in prizes. This year’s fellows include Rob Macaisa Colgate, Marissa Davis, Hermelinda Hernandez Monjaras, Chandanie Somwaru, and marion eames white. Since 1989, the Poetry Foundation has been recognizing the talents of young poets, providing them with a $27,000 prize, a subscription to Poetry magazine, and an invitation to publish their work. The fellows will also attend the Dodge Poetry Festival in Newark, New Jersey, where they will participate in a public reading on October 19, 2024. Each of these poets brings a unique voice and perspective to the poetry landscape, showcasing exceptional talent, dedication, and community involvement.
Rob Macaisa Colgate, a disabled, bakla poet and playwright, has been recognized for their collection “Hardly Creatures” and verse drama “My Love is Water.” Marissa Davis, a poet and translator from Paducah, Kentucky, received an Emerging Translator Mentorship Fellowship in 2023 and has had her work published in prestigious journals like Prairie Schooner and Poetry. Hermelinda Hernandez Monjaras, an indígena and undocumented poet of Zapotecan descent, has been published in various outlets, including the Academy of American Poets. Chandanie Somwaru, an Indo-Caribbean woman from Queens, New York, is known for her collection “Urgent \\ Where the Mind Goes \\ Scattered” and has been featured in the Academy of American Poets and other publications. marion eames white, a Black, trans poet from New York, combines translation theory with biblical genealogy in their work to challenge traditional narratives.
The Poetry Foundation also acknowledges the 2024 fellowship finalists, recognizing their exceptional talent and dedication to the art of poetry. The decision process involved 30 external readers and a panel of five external reviewers who carefully considered each application to select the fellows and finalists.
