December Marks Record Year for Illegal Immigration in U.S.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26, 2024 – In response to the recent release of CBP Nationwide Encounters of illegal aliens for the month of December, Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), made the following statement:

The month of December 2023 saw an unprecedented level of illegal immigration in the United States. A total of 371,036 nationwide encounters took place, surpassing the previous monthly record set in September by 30,000 encounters. The surge in encounters was largely driven by cartel-controlled flows through Arizona points of entry, such as Lukeville. A total of 302,034 encounters occurred along the Southern border. These figures do not even include the hundreds of thousands of ‘gotaways’ who illegally entered the country but were not apprehended by CBP.

More concerning is the fact that the vast majority of encountered illegal aliens are being released into the United States. In a recent public statement, Homeland Security Secretary Alexander Mayorkas, who is facing impeachment by the House of Representatives, acknowledged that over 70 percent of those encountered are being released into the United States. In private, he admitted to Border Patrol agents that more than 85 percent of the encountered individuals are being released.

Unless Congress takes decisive action to remove Secretary Mayorkas from office and compel the Biden administration to secure the borders, these unsustainable levels of illegal immigration will persist into 2024. H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, has already been approved by the House of Representatives but is currently stalled in the Democratic-controlled Senate. It is imperative that the Republican-led House administration insists on including the bill either as part of the FY 2024 budget or in the supplemental foreign aid package requested by President Biden.
