Crowley launches first all-electric tug in San Diego

Crowley, along with industry partners and supporters, recently christened the eWolf, America’s first all-electric harbor support tug in San Diego. This groundbreaking vessel operates on zero emissions and sustainable technologies, showcasing Crowley’s commitment to global sustainability and innovation. The eWolf offers high-power capability, safety, and efficiency, setting a new standard in the maritime industry.

During the christening ceremony, key industry leaders and officials came together to celebrate this milestone, including representatives from the U.S. Maritime Administration, the Port of San Diego, and the Air Pollution Control District of San Diego County, among others. The eWolf, built by Master Boat Builders in Alabama, boasts 70 tons of bollard pull and advanced safety features, surpassing its conventional predecessors.

Crowley’s President and CEO, Tom Crowley, highlighted the significance of the eWolf as a game-changer in the industry, offering environmental, economic, and operational benefits to communities and the maritime sector. The vessel is supported by a new microgrid shore charging station, allowing it to operate at full capacity on electricity, reducing diesel emissions and improving air quality in San Diego.

The collaborative effort between federal, state, and local partners, including the Air Resources Board of California and the U.S. EPA, underscores the shared goal of decarbonizing the port and creating a healthier environment for all communities. The eWolf is part of Crowley’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation, with a focus on transitioning traditional diesel-powered vessels to electric propulsion systems.

With more than 130 years of innovation and a strong commitment to sustainability, Crowley is a leader in safe and efficient marine services, supporting global trade and the economy. The company employs over 7,000 individuals worldwide and operates a fleet of over 170 vessels, making it a significant player in the maritime sector.
