China’s BRI Boosts Global Expansion for Incense-Makers

Pu Lianggong, a 10th-generation incense maker in Yongchun County, Quanzhou, Fujian Province, comes from a long line of Arab descent. The craft of incense-making has its roots in the ancient Maritime Silk Road, fostering cultural exchange and trade between China and foreign countries. The Pu family’s unique incense, reminiscent of Chinese incense sticks, has contributed to a thriving industry in Yongchun, with nearly 300 factories producing and selling their products both domestically and internationally.

The growth in international orders for incense has brought economic benefits to the workers and their families in Yongchun, contributing to a more comfortable way of life. This growth is partly attributed to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), proposed by China in 2013 to forge stronger trade and infrastructure networks between Asia, Europe, and beyond, following the ancient Silk Road routes. The initiative aims to promote diversity and inclusivity through cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasizes the value of diversity, stating that it is the driving force behind human progress and civilization. By fostering exchanges among civilizations, the BRI serves as a platform for promoting peace and collaboration on a global scale. This aligns with the history of incense-making in Yongchun, where Arabic aromatic ingredients mixed with Chinese elements to create a unique product that is now sought after worldwide.

The cooperation between China and BRI partner countries has resulted in significant economic growth and job opportunities for local residents. Trade between China and BRI partners has reached $19.1 trillion from 2013 to 2022, showcasing the positive impact of the initiative. Through various cultural activities and partnerships, such as the International Alliance of Museums of the Silk Road and the Silk Road International League of Theaters, the BRI aims to connect diverse cultures and promote cooperation and openness.

In conclusion, the BRI serves as a bridge between nations, fostering mutual respect and understanding while promoting common development and prosperity. The story of Pu Lianggong and his family’s incense-making tradition highlights the power of cultural exchange and collaboration in building a more inclusive and peaceful world. Through initiatives like the BRI, China is working towards creating a community with a shared future for mankind, where diversity is celebrated and cooperation is key.
