1,000+ Community Corrections Officers Gather in Indianapolis

The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) is gearing up to host its 49th Annual Training Institute at JW Marriott in Indianapolis, Indiana from June 28 – July 1. This event is recognized as the largest gathering for both juvenile and adult community corrections officers in America, bringing together over 1,000 in-person attendees and hundreds of virtual participants.

The training institute will feature 80+ workshops, keynote speakers, the Annual Women’s Symposium, and a significant moment with the unveiling of APPA’s first ever National Standards for Community Supervision. Attendees can look forward to engaging sessions on challenging topics, words of encouragement, and success stories in community corrections.

Kicking off the event is the 3rd Annual Women’s Symposium on Thursday, June 27, offering personal and professional development under the theme “Wellness Unveiled: Women Inspiring Women – Empowerment through Unity.” The opening session on Friday, June 28 will feature notable speakers, such as State Representative Carolyn Jackson, Mayor Joseph Hogsett, the Honorable Loretta Rush, and Commissioner Christina Reagle. Keynote speaker Michael DeLeon will share his personal journey and expertise in recidivism reduction, addiction advocacy, and criminal justice reform.

Throughout the training institute, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in intensive sessions focusing on crucial topics in community corrections, including physical and mental health for POs, administering an Impaired Driving Assessment, motivational interview skills, building mental health caseloads, and supervising high-risk clients. A highlight of the event will be the unveiling of APPA’s National Standards for Community Supervision on Saturday, June 29, marking a historic moment in the field.

Moreover, the institute will celebrate over 30 graduates from its Leadership Institute, recognizing them as the next generation of leaders in community corrections. Wrapping up the event on Monday, July 1, Chef Jeff Henderson, an award-winning chef and advocate for personal and professional development of the formerly incarcerated, will take the stage.
